I know there are a lot of SEO experts out there that are saying blog commenting looks spammy and is dead. I don’t agree. I do SEO in many different fields and see that a lot of my client’s competitors are spamming tons of blog comments and are being rewarded for it. Definitely visit relevant blogs to your field and post high value content with a return link to your website, just make sure that you do it the right way. Google is getting better at differentiating between what is genuine and what’s considered spammy. If a competitor is doing spammy things and getting rewarded for it, don’t think this is okay and follow their lead. Don’t take the short term view, think about the future. Don’t be one of those people that starts complaining when Google discovers what you’re up to and decides to push your website to page 10. Trust me, I have seen this happen so often, you can only cheat the system for so long.
Focus on getting YOUR content published on other websites with a link back to your site. Have people talking about what you have to say, not you talking about what they are saying. If there is a popular blogger talking about your genre then send him a message, ask him if you can be a guest blogger for the day. Lots of bloggers go on holidays and are afraid of not having any new content up while they are gone. Use this as an opportunity to put your best foot forward and offer your services. If you have a restaurant in Guelph then look to see if there are any people out there blogging about local restaurants. Offer them a free meal in exchange for a review and chances are they will post something nice about you because you have gone to such great effort. Let’s be real here, who doesn’t like a free meal?
